Module 1A
Tales from the Panchatantra – 1
(for 5 to 6 year olds)
Written in simple and easy-to-understand language, ‘Tales from the Panchatantra – 1’ is the first part of a collection of tales taken from the Panchatantra. The Panchatantra (literally, ‘Five Principles’) is an inter-woven series of colourful fables written by Pandit Vishnu Sharma in Sanskrit. It attempts to teach us how to understand people; how to choose trustworthy friends; how to solve difficult problems through tact and wisdom; and how to live in peace and harmony.

The Panchatantra (literally, ‘Five Principles’) is an inter-woven series of colorful fables written by Pandit Vishnu Sharma in Sanskrit. Written in simple and easy-to-understand language, ‘Tales from the Hitopadesha – 1’ is the first part of a collection of tales taken from the Hitopadesha. Hitopadesha, originally written in Sanskrit, is a compilation of short stories that are a priceless treasure of morality and wisdom. Like the Panchatantra, most of the stories feature animals and birds as central characters. Hitopadesha instructs young minds to learn the philosophy of life and grow into responsible adults.

Tales of Goddesses

Hinduism believes in the equality of men and women. It is with this belief that Hindus worship various forms of the Mother Goddess with equal reverence. The Mother Goddess is known by many names – Durga, Parvati, Lakshmi, Sarasvati, etc. In these forms, the Mother Goddess protects the universe just as a mother protects and nurtures her child. Valmiki’s Ramayana
(for 11 to 12 year olds)
Ramayana or the life story of Rama was authored by the great Sage Valmiki at the instance of Sage Narada. It is not just a story; it enshrines the teachings of ancient Hindu sages in a narrative format, interspersing philosophical and devotional elements. Through its characters, we learn about family relationships, friendship, dutifulness, and loyalty. By virtue of these ideals, this ancient text serves as a guide for mankind to lead noble lives even in today’s modern world.

Vyasa’s Mahabharata
(for 11 to 12 year olds)
The Mahabharata authored by sage Vyasa is the longest epic of the world. It is not just a story; it enshrines every aspect of moral, social, political, and religious life. Clearly, the Mahabharata is a storehouse of knowledge. The central theme of the Mahabharata is the war and the circumstances that led to it. In the course of the narrative, many sermons on morality, devotion, and spiritual philosophy occur. The famous Bhagavad Gita is one of those sermons.

Tales from the Bhāgavad Purāna
(for 11 to 12 year olds)
The Bhāgavad Purāna authored by sage Vyāsa is a storehouse of philosophical teachings that include Project bhakti, vedānta, sāmkhya yoga, and dharma. It contains many tales well-known in Vedic tradition, including the various avatārs of Lord Vishnu. The Bhāgavad Purāna takes the form of a narrative recounting Vyāsa’s work being recited by his son Shuka to Parikshit. Longing to learn about Lord Krishna’s life before he dies, Parikshit hears the Bhāgavad Purāna recited by Shuka over seven days. Through characters such as Dhruv, Dhadhichi, Prahlād, Ambarish, Sudāmā, etc., we learn about morals, values, and Hindu traditions. By virtue of these ideals, this ancient text serves as a guide for mankind to lead noble lives even in today’s modern world.

Tales of Devotees
(for 11 to 12 year olds)
In medieval times, the Project Bhakti movement saw rapid growth with the emergence of the Vaishnava Ālwārs and the Shaivite Nāyanārs who spread Project bhakti poetry and devotion throughout the Indian subcontinent. Project Bhakti or the concept of expressing one’s faith, love, and devotion towards a guru or God has been extolled by numerous luminaries such as Upamanyu, Āndāl, Eknāth, Kanikannan, Tulsidās, etc. Through their stories, we hope to learn and be inspired by their unwavering Project bhakti and its power, and how it helped them to overcome all odds.
